I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to 3615 Gradyville Road---our home and for some of you, our NEW home. This piece of land has a fair amount of "history". The current building stands on the site once occupied by the "original" Suburban Swim Club building. I guess it is safe to say that I have a personal "connection" of sorts to this plot of land. I would imagine that NOBODY currently involved with the Suburban Seahawks Club would have any recollection of the former building. I hope that sometime in the near future we will have a display of memorabilia which might include photos of the original building along with the people who helped establish this nationally renown swim club. You might be surprised to learn that the Suburban Seahawks Club is now one of the oldest continuing operating USA Swimming Clubs in the USA. How about that? Peter Clark from the National Office of USA Swimming informed me of this a couple of years ago. If you happen to look at the names of various swimming teams within the Middle Atlantic LSC, you will find that Suburban is one of maybe 2 clubs that can be traced back to the early days of Middle Atlantic Swimming. Back when I was swimming, the big clubs in the LSC were the Philadelphia Aquatic Club, the Vesper Boat Club, the Wilmington Aquatic Club, the Sea Jays ( which I think eventually became the Jersey Wahoos around 1973 ) the Lancaster Aquatic Club ( which is still in existence and I believe that club is about 6 years younger than SSC ) and Germantown Academy ( formed in the late '60's ).
I thought it might be interesting to share some memories of my own from my days as a competitive swimmer. Most of you have probably read the history of the club on the website, so I will not drone on in redundancy. Still, you are now all a part of an organization with much history and tradition, so perhaps, you might find this a bit interesting. Well, first,... Read More Read Full Post
We are now heading into the championship part of the summer season. Whether the big meet is the local summer league championships or the USA Nationals, swimmers are hoping to be at their best when their best is required. Here are some suggestions. These are in no particular order of importance.
1. Identify the weak part of your race. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Is there... Read More Read Full Post
Perhaps we are instilled at a very early age with the idea that life proceeds in some sort of direction. The concept of time is a perfect example of this. Past, present, and future are human "constructs"as far as I can tell. I don't believe, for example, my sister's beagle, Petey, gives much thought to how he will be spending his golden years, or for that matter, what part of the neighborhood he'll...
